SECURITY SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY

National security in Nigeria is the issue of political morality, which focuses on the question of defining the relationship between the state and the various groups in the society. Political morality properly construed seeks to establish and sustain the essential conditions for the smooth functioning of the state and society.  Nigeria is a country that has huge potentials. Unfortunately, almost 50 years after gaining independence from Britain, years of misrule by both Military and elected governments have ensured that the majority of the citizens remain poor, and lack even the most basic infrastructure. Nigeria has a population of 140 million people. 85 per cent of who live in poverty. There are no jobs. Young people who manage to go to school come out and search endlessly for jobs. The country should be rich by any standards. Government after governments have raped the country looted the treasury and left the people worse off. Oil accounts for about 95% of the country's income. Just 40 years ago, the country had a robust agriculture based economy and exported cocoa, groundnuts, palm oil, cassava and other products. Then came oil and the rot set in. Most of Nigeria's citizens are poor and struggling to feed themselves. They are hardworking, but have been so battered by poverty, that their sense of good vs. bad is blurred. They see the politicians and their cronies living in stupendous wealth, while they cannot afford life's basic amenities. . Armed robbery, political assassinations, kidnapping, carjacking, mugging, poorly maintained health facilities, bad roads, lack of steady supply of electricity, fraud and lately the stigma of a nation of terrorists is what Nigerians have to endure.
The current security challenge which has truly tasked and threatened the nation must be decisively confronted; Beyond Boko Haram and armed robberies the problem is that the system is in dire need of an overhaul... Boko Haram's attacks have become more sophisticated and deadly in recent weeks in Africa's top oil producer. The Nigerian Islamist sect has killed at least 935 people since it launched an uprising in 2009, including more than 250 in the first weeks of this year. This is no time to sit on the fence and engage in the blame game. The situation has degenerated to an intolerable level leading to the mass movement (exodus) of our people from one end of the country to the order. Nigerians are highly intelligent and resourceful people and can put an immediate end to all of these happenings when their own status is on the line and their livelihood is at stake or threatened. Painfully we are not there; we have not gotten to that point yet but may soon reach the point of no return. Certain people are benefiting financially from the current security situation in the country, from inflated security contracts...We now have conflict entrepreneurs within an already terrible system, thus compounding an already dust inflicted situation. There are no real interests to control the activities of Boko Haram either by decisive action, negotiation or dialogue because of vested interests. As the president continues to say in various forums, the Boko Harm days are few or they will fade away. The same militants that claim to have been reformed issue threats at every slightest opportune time. It is common knowledge that the president is not even protected at all and you can get at him at any time in or out of his residence. Sadly his only residence these days are outside the country or in Aso Rock and its vicinities. Abuja is beginning to look like Islamabad, check points, security operatives everywhere. Good evidence of insecurity in Nigeria is the manifest incapability and inefficiency of the police force with its failure to maintain law and order and provide security for the citizen.
Nigeria isn’t Libya. It has a population 15 times that of Libya. It is not Egypt, Nigeria is Africa. Saving Nigeria is vital to world stability, something only a select few know. Destroying Nigeria is vital to world entropy, something only a select few know also, it is known fact that the security of the entire nation has been greatly compromised by the activities of certain individuals, as robberies on a James Bond in the South West, kidnapping on a Mexican wave in the South East and rape elsewhere and Boko Haram holding sway up country. Time will tell.
